A new shipment of orchids and anthuriums arrived today in Samoa, marking another milestone in the ongoing efforts of the Australia and New Zealand supported Pacific Horticultural and Agricultural Market Access Plus (PHAMA Plus) Program to grow the ornamental industry in Samoa.

The second phase of this initiative supports the remarkable work of Samoan women and villagers who cultivate a wide range of ornamental plants and floriculture products. The plants they grow not only enhance the beauty of communities but also provide a vital income source, especially for women, who are the driving force behind the ornamental horticulture sector.

Women lead in creating floral arrangements, garlands, and decorations for ceremonies, public events, and home beautification, with many relying on plant sales as their primary livelihood.

PHAMA Plus is improving access to rare plant varieties for multiplication and marketing supporting five local businesses: Agnes Florist, Princess Grace Ornamental & Plant Hire, Flonior’s Tropical Plants, Euphrates FARM FRESH and Tropical Plants, and Mama’s Nursery in establishing orchid nurseries to accelerate the availability of high-value plants in Samoa.
The partners will collectively receive 2,000 new plants to help expand their ornamental businesses, contributing to the development of the local orchid industry for both local and potential export markets.
