Timely boost for Tongan root crop exports
Construction has commenced on the completion of a root crop processing and packing facility in the Eastern District of Tongatapu that will strengthen Tonga’s agricultural exports and improve the livelihoods of root crop farmers.
The project is a partnership between Lotopoha Trading, one of Tonga’s leading root crop exporters, and the Australia and New Zealand supported Pacific Horticultural and Agricultural Market Access Plus Program (PHAMA Plus).
“The joint investment will help us improve our post-harvest handling, food safety and storage capabilities and allow us to the meet rigorous standards required by international markets,” said Melesisi Finefeuiaki, Owner and Managing Director of Lotopoha Trading Ltd.
Once complete, some fifty farming households are expected to benefit directly from the increased access to premium markets in Australia, New Zealand and United States, with the potential to reach an additional 500 farming households across Tonga.
Over the next two to three years, the facility will help Lotopoha increase its export volumes and provide more opportunities for its network of farmers.
In addition, the facility will create new employment opportunities for women in leadership and operational roles.
Alison Gow, First Secretary for Development from the Australian High Commission in Tonga, visited the site in early March. “Australia is committed to working with Tonga to strengthen agricultural exports and create lasting economic benefits for farmers and rural communities,” said Ms Gow. “This facility will ensure Tongan root crops meet international standards, helping farmers access premium markets while improving food security and livelihoods.”
Aligning with Tonga’s ambitions to increase its agricultural exports and support rural communities, the new facility will serve as a model for improving post-production standards in the country, setting the stage for continued growth of the sector.
The PHAMA Plus Program will be providing capacity building training to ensure the long-term success of the partnership and its positive impact on Tonga’s economy.
