Pacific agribusinesses explore disability- inclusive agribusiness at PWAF 2025
A side event at the Pacific Week of Agriculture and Forestry (PWAF) this week brought together agribusinesses, government representatives, civil society, private sector and people with disability to explore what it means to be an inclusive agribusiness in the Pacific.
Hosted by the Australia and New Zealand-supported Pacific Horticultural and Agricultural Market Access Plus (PHAMA Plus) program, the event “Becoming an Agribusiness of Choice for People with Disabilities” highlighted both the social and business value of including people with disabilities in agriculture and agribusinesses.
The session showcased the findings of a recent PHAMA Plus initiative, presenting early findings that will inform the development of a Technical Guidance Note, developed to support agribusinesses across the region in becoming more accessible and inclusive. The Guidance Note draws on consultations with farmers with disabilities, Organisations of Persons with Disabilities, and agribusiness partners, and is guided by a multi-stakeholder Reference Group.

“We’re proud to share this work—it’s a first for the region and a practical resource for any agribusiness ready to take a step forward in inclusion,” said Setareki Macanawai, Strategic Advisor with the Strategic Development Group who undertook the work with PHAMA Plus. “Inclusion is not only a human right—it also strengthens businesses, families and communities.”
The event directly contributes to the PWAF 2025 theme Transforming Agriculture and Forestry and aligns with the sub-themes of More Regeneration and More Productivity by demonstrating how inclusive approaches can boost workforce participation, resilience and innovation.
PHAMA Plus, funded by the governments of Australia and New Zealand, works in partnership with Pacific Island countries to support inclusive economic growth through improved agricultural and horticultural export opportunities.
A summary handout–highlighting why inclusive agribusiness matters –was made available to participants. The final Guidance Note will be shared once completed.
