SOLOMON ISLANDS KAVA QUALITY STANDARD

The Solomon Islands, a nation of nine hundred and ninty nine islands in the South Pacific is situated to the east of Papua New Guinea and northwest of Vanuatu.

Agriculture is considered the most important sector for the Solomon Islands national economy. Like most developing countries, agriculture is the main source of national income and sustains about 85 per cent of the rural population with food crops, cash crops and livestock for their daily livelihoods, food and social security.

With the increase in popularity of kava and kava products at the world market, kava is categorized together with cocoa, coconut and coffee as a fast-growing sector. Thus, representatives from the Government of the Solomon Islands and the private sector have worked together to develop the Solomon Islands National Quality Standard for kava.
