Commercial Kava Imports into Australia (as at 31 October, 2022)

Since the launch of Australia’s Commercial Kava Pilot (the pilot) Phase 2 in December 2021, allowing for the commercial importation of kava into Australia as a food, the Pacific Horticultural and Agricultural Market Access Program (PHAMA Plus) has worked with the Australian Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and Pacific governments in collaboration with Pacific Trade Invest Australia, HACCP Australia and the PACER Plus Implementation Unit to assist Pacific kava stakeholders better understand importing requirements.

At the end of October 2022, around 147tons of kava have been imported under the pilot. This consists of 236 consignments of kava being supplied by 430 exporters from the Pacific islands. Of the 430 suppliers, only 1 supplier from the Solomon Islands exported 30kgs to Australia.
