Agriculture in Tonga contributes 16% of the country’s gross domestic product and, along with forestry, provides 44% of exports. More than 95% of Tonga’s agriculturally-active households engage in subsistence and semi-subsistence agriculture activity, and only 5% engage in commercial activities.

PHAMA Plus has been working in Tonga since 2011 to maintain and improve existing market access, and create new markets by developing the capacity of public and private sectors to meet export market requirements. The Program continues to support farming households in Tonga through our public private partnerships to increase the quantity and quality of their agricultural, horticultural and cultural exports in ways that benefit producers, exporters and importers.
Horticulture
PHAMA Plus builds on the work of PHAMA and aims to continue to increase the export of horticulture produce (cucurbits) from Tonga that meets consistency and quality specifications of the importing countries by improving household income form more than 1,000 households. PHAMA Plus’ work in the sector builds on the work undertaken in previous phases of PHAMA.
