The commercial coconut sector in PNG includes three sub-sectors. The largest is the traditional copra/coconut oil sub-sector which includes copra producers, copra millers and exporters who produce and export copra and/or process copra into coconut oil (CNO) and copra meal as a by-product for exports. There is also a substantial but largely informal sub-sector engaged in production and domestic sale of coconuts for consumption and drinking, including transport of nuts from coastal areas to the highlands. High value coconut products – including virgin coconut oil and its derivatives – are a growing segment in Papua New Guinea’s coconut sector. With only 16 producers in the country, the output remains low, but demand is rising.

PHAMA Plus works with Kokonas Indastri Koporesen of Papua New Guinea to support the development of industry-wide standards for selected tradeable coconut products from PNG to access high value coconut export markets.
