SROS signs MOU to boost Scientific Research and Agricultural Exports in Samoa

The ongoing efforts of the Scientific Research Organisation of Samoa (SROS) to strengthen its capacity in scientific research and advisory services will be supported with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Pacific Horticultural and Agricultural Market Access Plus program (PHAMA Plus). These services are essential for growing a successful export industry in Samoa and potentially the region.

The MOU was officially signed by the Honourable Minister for SROS, Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt and Mr Andrew Piper, the PHAMA Plus Team Leader.

The Australia and New Zealand supported program will provide support that will enable SROS to conduct further scientific research for product development in the agri-food industry, as well as supplying technical and quality testing services and progressing towards a Food Innovation Centre.

SROS Acting Chief Executive Officer, Fiso Pousui Dr. Fiame Leo said, “We are grateful for the ongoing assistance provided by the PHAMA Plus program.”

“We are looking forward to providing a variety of key services for the agri-food sectors in Samoa and other countries in the region, such as credible testing of kava and nonu quality, chemical residues in cocoa and water quality; development of value-added products such as flours and frozen root crops; validation of biosecurity treatments such as hot water for fresh taro exports; sensory evaluation of food products such as taro varieties; and growing our capacity to provide advice and audit of food safety systems.”

With SROS being a key partner for PHAMA Plus since 2011, PHAMA Plus Country Manager, Asuao Kirifi Pouono said, “PHAMA Plus looks forward to further assisting SROS with the primary goal of adding value and developing products and processes for adoption by the private sector businesses.”

Asuao added that “this partnership will ensure local businesses and growers have access to the benefits from the research findings and services provided by SROS.”

PHAMA Plus is supporting Samoa’s agricultural sector to increase export volumes and returns for exporters and farmers.
